Hiking and camping opportunities number in the thousands in Big Bend. It's a big place. At Desert Sports we know all the usual places to camp and hike, but we also know of places that are well hidden from the general public and aren't mentioned in most guidebooks.

Desert Sports provides fully customized, guided trips to unique areas in Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Ranch State Park and private lands. All our guided trips include great food, informative and experienced guides, and unique itineraries. Vehicle support and combination trips (pack, pedal and paddle) are available so you can completely customize your Big Bend adventure. With a minimum of four people, the following trips can be scheduled. We'll also be happy to assist you in putting together custom or combination hiking or backpacking trips.

Big Bend Ranch State Park
Lower Shut-up Hike Thru Time

This hike is a state park classic. It begins with the drive from the historic Terlingua/ Lajitas mining district, along the Camino del Rio and into the state park's interior road system. With interpretive and scenic stops along the way, we'll make our way to our camp inside the ancient caldera of the Solitario. The Lower Shut-up is a spectacular canyon that drains from the Solitario into Fresno Creek taking us through millions of years of geologic history on this out and back excursion. We recommend the 3-day version of this tour for those who want to fully experience this canyon hike.

Desert Sports offers custom itineraries for backcountry hiking and vehicle supported hiking and camping. In Big Bend National Park, the South Rim, Pine Canyon, the Mesa de Anguilla and Devils Den are just some of the options. New opportunities for exploring are opening up in the Big Bend Ranch State Park as well. Most of our mountain bike itineraries can be adapted to driving and hiking trips, including backcountry camping in some of the most remote parts of Big Bend.
